The Best Picnic Spots Near Quimbaya, Quindío

If you're searching for somewhere to spread out a blanket and actually look at Colombia's coffee region instead of just driving through it, you're in the right part of the country. Quindío is small enough that most of its best views are a 20–40 minute drive from Quimbaya, and several of them cost nothing to get into. Here are five worth the trip.

Mirador del Tiempo Detenido, Filandia — free

A short walk from Filandia's town center, this lookout gives you a wide, unbroken view across the coffee valley — and it's free. It's a good first stop if you're easing a group into a day out: park in town, walk five minutes, and you already have a view worth the drive.

Colina Iluminada, Filandia — 12,000 COP

A 27-meter wooden observation tower just outside town, open 9am–6pm, with multiple viewing levels and a small refreshment area at the top. It's more of a built attraction than a quiet picnic spot, but the 360-degree view over the surrounding municipalities makes it worth combining with the free mirador above on the same trip.

The short palm route, Valle de Cocora

You don't need the full 5–7 hour Cocora loop to get the classic photo everyone comes for. The short route to the wax palm viewpoints is about 1–3 km and takes 1–2.5 hours round trip with stops — flat enough for kids or anyone who'd rather not commit to a full hike, and it ends at open, grassy ground that's genuinely picnic-friendly, with the tallest palms in the world as the backdrop.

Quindío Botanical Garden (Calarcá)

If the goal is a slower, shadier outing, the Quindío Botanical Garden is home to over 180 bird species and a mariposario with more than 1,500 butterflies — plenty to look at without much walking, and a good option on a hotter afternoon. It's in Calarcá, about 35 minutes from Quimbaya, open daily 9am–3:30pm.

Right at home: the deck at Casa de los Sueños

And if a group doesn't want to go anywhere at all, the deck overlooking the plantain and cacao groves at Casa de los Sueños is its own version of this — a private view of the same countryside, with the pool right there for anyone who'd rather swim than hike.
